Post-holiday syndrome: you won’t get sick, but the symptoms are very real

It is what it is. Summer and holidays are over -if you were lucky enough to spend the holidays- and we returned to the harsh reality of getting up early and going back to work. You are discouraged and very tired, and it looks like you are sick.

The term “post-vacation syndrome” was used to describe these feelings that many of us have when we return from vacation. This term almost makes us sound sick, but it’s not that bad either. Syndromes after the holidays only have the name, they do not imply disability or disease.

What is the so-called post-vacation syndrome?

 

Does this mean that post-vacation syndrome is a lie? No, this means that it is not classified as a disease and cannot be diagnosed, but some workers, especially those who have very long vacations, have common feelings when they return to work after vacation and suffer temporary symptoms.

This is because these symptoms usually need to adjust to the changes. This process can cause us some discomfort, but generally it does not last more than a few days and it is quickly readjusted to the routine.

 

What are the symptoms of post-vacation syndrome?

 

The discomforts vary from person to person, but the most common symptoms are insomnia, fatigue, apathy, difficulty concentrating on the tasks at hand, and even irritability. Don’t worry, these symptoms are not caused by a disease, but by a completely normal acclimatization process.

 

These problems usually last only a few days and usually go away without the need for any type of treatment.

 

In any case, if these sensations do not go away in a short period of time, they intensify or even get worse, you may be facing a case of anxiety or other problems. It is likely that in this case the situation is related to problems at work. If this is the case, the best thing you can do is go to a specialist.

 

What to do to avoid post-vacation syndrome

When the symptoms appear, all we can do is wait a few days to get back into the routine; It may seem difficult, but humans are very adaptable and the symptoms disappear on their own.

 

In any case, you can always make some changes to prevent its appearance. For example, don’t wait until the last day before you return to work to return to work; Staying on the beach for the last second is appealing, but the change can be straining on your state of mind. Come back the day before and give yourself some time to adjust. So the return to reality is gradual.

 

Keep doing what you like even if you go back to work. Going back to work with our routines does not mean stopping enjoying our time or putting aside our hobbies. Trying to find time to enjoy outside of work helps us return to a normal life. Playing sports can be a good idea, as it acts as an outlet and helps release endorphins.
